Owners know their pets better than anyone else! They spend everyday caring for them and can tell when things are a little off. A natural response is to help your pet get back to normal as soon as possible. When people are sick our natural response is to give them over the counter medications. This translates easily to our pets. Unfortunately although the owners have the best intentions at heart some over the counter medications can be harmful to their pets.
Approved medications (in moderation):
- Benadryl
- Aspirin
- Neosporin
Toxic medications:
- Advil
- Aleve
- Ibuprofen
- Motrin
- Tylenol
Remember the best practice is to always confirm with your veterinarian that these over the counter medications are ok to use on your individual pet. Your veterinarian with have a better idea of what is best for your individual pet. If symptoms continue or become worse it is bets to get your pet into the veterinarian as soon as possible. Also be cautions of the possible signs of poisoning:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Drooling
- Coughing
- Pale gums
- Lethargic
- Excessive thirst
- Excessive urination
